his speech that the Exhibition held in the Victoria Park is the focal point of the 530-

odd celebration activities. The Exhibition showcases the remarkable scientific and

technological achievements of our motherland and the technologically innovative

spirit of Hong Kong's younger generation. It is hoped that the Exhibition can arouse

the interest of the citizens, especially the youngsters, and enlighten their dreams in

the area. It is also hoped that Hong Kong can face her challenges ahead with vigour

and technologically innovative spirit, by drawing experience from the motherland’s

great revival through the development of space technology from scratch in the

absence of foreign assistance.

CY Leung, Vice Chairperson of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference

and Chief Executive of the HKSAR, added that the establishment of the Innovation

and Technology Bureau shows that the current administration attaches great

importance to local technological development. Over the past few years, under the

leadership of Secretary Nicholas Yang, the Bureau has started off on the right foot.

Such progress is manifested by the MTR’s expansion into the Mainland China and

other western countries, where the total distance of rail is 7 times of that of Hong

Kong. Leung believes that Hong Kong citizens and youngsters, as part of the Chinese

nation, can take an active role in boosting the motherland’s technological

development, including that of space technology.

differences between the people of Hong Kong and those in mainland China.

The Vice President of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, Zhang

Jianheng, expresses gratitude to the Celebrations Association for inviting them to

hold the Exhibition together. Zhang also reveals the special historical ties between

Hong Kong and the development of China’s space technology: the motherland’s

maiden voyage on launching international commercial satellite was a joint-venue

with a Hong Kong enterprise; and that the first national flag and regional flag raised

in the HKSAR had travelled to the space in a Chinese satellite before they were given

to the SAR government as gifts. He wishes to strengthen the cooperation with Hong

Kong regarding space technology so as to confer benefits on mankind.

Principal President of the Celebrations Association’s Preparatory Committee, Wong

Man Li, also expresses gratitude to the contributions of every institutes and
